Review: The Wicked Bargain by Gabe Cole Novoa

Updated: Sep 27, 2023

5 stars

Hey pals, so on Mar León-de la Rosa's sweet 16, guess who shows up? Yup, el Diablo himself! Now Mar isn't your average teen - they're a transmasculine nonbinary pirate with a knack for playing with fire and ice. But even their magic can't undo the nasty deal their dad made with el Diablo, who now wants his payment: the souls of Mar's father and their ship crew.

Just when things look bleak, Mar gets a lifeline from the last pirate crew in the Caribbean. But el Diablo isn't done yet - he gives Mar an ultimatum: give up their soul to save their dad by the Harvest Moon or lose him forever. Sounds impossible, right? Well, Mar thinks so too. They're not about to make any deals and they know their magic is no match for el Diablo. But then they meet Bas - a cocky yet charming pirate (who happens to be the captain's son) and Dami - a genderfluid demonio whose intentions are always kinda hazy. For the first time ever, Mar thinks they might just have what it takes to use their magic. It could be their salvation... or it could be their end.

What I loved about this book was that there was zero transphobia or homophobia - everyone treated Mar with respect all throughout. The writing was top notch and once I started reading, I couldn't put it down until I finished it in just a few days. This book was an absolute delight and I'm giving it a solid 5 stars!
