Review: Keep My Candle Bright by AM LaMonte

4.5 stars

Hey folks, just finished this epic tale and boy, was it a rollercoaster! It's a historical fiction novel with a dash of romance that really ties the story together.

Our main characters are Rafe and Helen. They're from different walks of life - Rafe's been living on the streets as a sought-after prostitute, while Helen is the rebellious daughter of a wealthy businessman. They meet in Five Points, strike up an unlikely friendship that blossoms into more before Helen is forced into marriage with another rich guy.

After her wedding, Rafe can't continue his life as it is and finds refuge with a local healer who encourages him to become a doctor under a new identity. Fast forward 6-7 years, he's now Dr. Victor Clark and crosses paths with Helen again when he's called in to treat her post-childbirth depression.

This reunion sparks something in Helen - she divorces her husband, goes solo and chases her dream of being a journalist. But their reunion also stirs up trouble for Rafe when his past catches up to him.

I won't spoil any more but I gotta say, despite some historical hiccups here and there, I really enjoyed how the story highlighted the struggles both Rafe and Helen had to overcome before they could find their happily ever after.
