Review: I Am Ayah The Way Home by Donna Hill

Updated: Sep 27, 2023

5 stars

Hey folks! I've just finished this fab book by Donna Hill, and boy; it's a rollercoaster ride through time!

The story weaves the lives of ancestors and descendants together, separated by generations but connected by their struggles. It centers around Alessandra, our main character, who's an up-and-coming photographer. She's been estranged from her dad for a while but rushes back home to Sag Harbor when he falls ill.

Amidst all this, she starts having these crazy vivid dreams and visions that she can't make heads or tails of. It turns out her dad wanted her to know about their family history - something her mom never really shared with her.

Back in Sag Harbor, she bumps into Zach - a neighbor who's super close to her dad. This makes Alessandra a tad jealous but also intrigued. The story from Zach's perspective adds another layer to this soul-stirring tale about soulmates, honoring the past, and forgiveness.

The connection between Alessandra and Zach is intense as they delve into her family history together. Zach discovers that Alessandra's family is crucial to his research on the maroon community in Sag Harbor.

This book had me hooked from start to finish with its many plot twists. At first, I was puzzled about how the historical accounts fit into the main narrative but trust me; it all comes together beautifully in the end.

Big shoutout to Hear Our Voices Tours for hooking me up with a copy of this amazing book!
